A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) chose to abandon armed rebellion and surrendered to military and police authorities in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, on Thursday, March 21, 2024.

The surrender took place when a 19-year-old resident of Sitio Kastila, Barangay General Emilio Aguinaldo in Sablayan, decided to turn himself in to the troops of the 68th Infantry “Kaagapay” Battalion and the Occidental Mindoro Philippine National Police (PNP) in Barangay Murtha, San Jose. This individual was identified as a member of the remnants of Platun GMT under the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee.

Reports indicate that the surrenderee had joined the NPA ranks on February 25, 2023. However, feelings of uncertainty about the future of armed rebellion led him to reassess his choices. This introspection intensified after a prior encounter with soldiers in Barangay Malisbong, Sablayan, on May 30, 2023.

In response to this development, Maj. Gen. Roberto S. Capulong, Commander of the 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division, praised the courageous decision of the rebel returnee to disengage from armed struggle and embrace lawful pursuits. He emphasized that this surrender sends a clear message to other insurgents that there is a promising future awaiting them should they opt for the path of peace and reconciliation.

The voluntary surrender of the NPA member signifies a triumph in the government’s campaign to promote disarmament and societal reintegration. It highlights the efficacy of outreach endeavors fostering dialogue and trust between ex-rebels and state entities. This act emphasizes the potential for peaceful resolution and reconciliation, paving the way for constructive engagement and the restoration of harmony within communities affected by insurgency.

As the nation continues its pursuit of lasting peace and stability, instances of voluntary surrender serve as beacons of hope, illustrating that reconciliation and cooperation are viable alternatives to violence and conflict. The government remains committed to providing support and assistance to former rebels as they embark on their journey towards a peaceful and productive life.
