Calamba City, Laguna – Throughout the month of June, the Calambagong Buhayani Festival 2024 is being celebrated in Calamba City, coinciding with the celebration of the country’s 126th Independence Day on June 12, 2024, with the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan“.
This ceremony was a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the pursuit of freedom. Heroes like José Rizal, Andrés Bonifacio, and Emilio Aguinaldo, among others, laid down their lives so that future generations could live in a free and independent nation. Their legacy is carried forward by the continued efforts to uphold democratic values and human rights in the Philippines today.
Leading the celebration, the City Government of Calamba, headed by Mayor Roseller H. Rizal, along with Vice Mayor Atty. Angelito S. Lazaro Jr., the City Council, Department Heads, DepEd, PNP, BFP, BJMP, government employees, NGOs, and residents of Calamba, participated in the flag-raising ceremony.
The program commenced with students from Calamba City College waving the Philippine flag, followed by the entry of the colors led by PLtCol. Milany Martirez of the Calamba PNP. The ceremony continued with the raising of the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Philippine Flag, led by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
In his message, Mayor Roseller H. Rizal stated, “The colorful revolutionary flags paraded before us symbolize the long and complex history of war, violence, and extreme hardship our country endured. These flags witnessed many events in our history – used by the Katipunan and other secret organizations striving to break free from foreign oppression. We once again honor the intellect and example of our compatriot and national hero, Gat Jose Rizal, the bravery of Katipunan leader Andres Bonifacio, the youngest General and Hero of Tirad Pass, Gregorio del Pilar, the Brain of the Revolution, Apolinario Mabini, and many others whose sacrifices we continue to appreciate and value.”
He added, “Righteous and orderly governance is often proven by the recognition we receive from various government agencies and the private sector. The latest recognition from the RP-Mission and Development Foundation placed us as the Number One TOP PERFORMING CITY MAYOR in Region 4a/4b. We have many initiatives to make it easier for our citizens to receive services from our offices, from obtaining documents such as Civil Registration Certificates, Business Permits, Tax Declarations, paying taxes, securing Building and Construction Permits, to services provided by our City Health Office, Social Services, Veterinary Services, and more – our Department Heads and staff are doing their part not just to comply but to exceed what the law requires.”
Vice Mayor Angelito Lazaro also delivered a message, thanking everyone who attended the event. According to Lazaro, “The freedom we enjoy today is the result of the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of our heroes. They offered their lives so we could attain this freedom.”
In her message, Congresswoman Charisse Ann Hernandez Alcantara said, “It is undeniable that we are known as the land of heroes because it was here in our city that the young Dr. Jose Rizal grew up, inspiring the entire nation to rise against the Spanish.”
The ceremony marking 126 years since the Philippines gained its independence from Spanish colonization, doves were released into the sky while the evocative strains of “Bayan Ko” filled the air. This symbolic act served not only as a reminder of the country’s hard-won freedom but also as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Filipino people.
The Continuing Struggle for Freedom
While the Philippines celebrates over a century of independence, the fight for true freedom and equality continues. Issues such as poverty, corruption, and human rights abuses still challenge the nation. However, the symbolic acts of releasing doves and singing “Bayan Ko” serve as reminders of what has been achieved and what still needs to be done.
The Historical Significance of “Bayan Ko“
“Bayan Ko” is a patriotic song that holds a deep place in the hearts of Filipinos. Written in 1929 by José Corazón de Jesús, with music by Constancio de Guzmán, it became an anthem of resistance and hope during times of oppression. Initially penned as a protest against American occupation, its powerful lyrics and melody have made it a timeless call for freedom and justice.
The Symbolism of the Doves
Doves are universally recognized symbols of peace, freedom, and hope. Their release during this commemorative event was a deeply symbolic gesture, representing the Philippines’ enduring struggle and ultimate triumph over colonial rule. As the doves soared into the sky, they embodied the aspirations of a nation that, despite centuries of subjugation, never relinquished its desire for autonomy and self-determination.
A Reflection on 126 Years of Independence
The release of the doves while “Bayan Ko” was sung served as a powerful metaphor for the Philippines’ journey over the past 126 years. Since declaring independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, the country has faced numerous challenges. From American colonization and Japanese occupation during World War II to internal strife and political upheavals, the Filipino spirit of resilience has remained unbroken.
