Senator Lito Lapid has urged the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food to investigate the reported expiration of vaccines purchased to control the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the Philippines. Lapid expressed concern over the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) alleged negligence in allowing the vaccines to expire, which could have been distributed to curb the spread of the virus affecting hog farms across various provinces.

The call for investigation comes after the ASF epidemic struck the provinces of Batangas and Occidental Mindoro, severely impacting the hog industry, supply of pork, and leading to price hikes in the market. Senator Lapid emphasized the need to identify and hold accountable the DA officials responsible for the wasted vaccines, which were procured from abroad.

Despite Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel’s assertion that there is no need to declare a state of national calamity due to the epidemic, Lapid insisted on the importance of securing the pork supply, especially with the holiday season approaching, when demand traditionally spikes.

Senator Lapid also appealed to President Bongbong Marcos Jr. to allocate additional funds for the immediate purchase and distribution of ASF vaccines in areas critically affected by the epidemic. He warned that if the ASF outbreak is not promptly addressed, it could spread further, potentially leading to a nationwide pork supply crisis. Lapid, a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, underscored the urgency of the situation, expressing his fears of a looming crisis.
