August 23, 2024 — The Local Governance Summit 2024, organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in partnership with the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), concluded at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Over two days, government officials, stakeholders, and experts gathered to discuss strategies for advancing local governance under the theme, “LGUs sa Bagong Pilipinas: Smart. Resilient. Driven.”

The summit served as a crucial platform for reinforcing the partnership between national and local governments. Key discussions focused on enhancing the role of local government units (LGUs) in national development, fostering collaboration among various government levels, and developing a shared vision for future governance.

Several short-term outcomes were anticipated, including raising awareness of the critical roles LGUs play in national progress and improving coordination between LGUs, national agencies, and other stakeholders. Participants also generated concrete recommendations for policy and program development to strengthen local governance frameworks.

Looking toward the medium-term, the summit aims to bolster LGUs’ capacities to deliver quality public services, improve fiscal management, and enhance governance systems and practices. A focus on fostering decentralized cooperation among LGUs was also a key component of the discussions.

On the second day of the summit, Vice Governor Atty. Karen Agapay joined President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Senate President Chiz Escudero, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos, and ULAP President Gov Dax Cua. Their presence underscored the event’s significance and the commitment of national leaders to supporting local governance reforms.

The Local Governance Summit 2024 represents a significant step toward achieving a more resilient and capable local government system in the Philippines, setting a clear path for future advancements in local governance.
