The Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) CaLaBaRZon has confirmed the first case of Mpox in the region, encompassing the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon. The patient, whose symptoms began on August 10, 2024, initially sought medical attention at a rural health unit after experiencing fever and rashes.

Despite having no recent travel history, the patient contracted the Mpox virus and is currently recovering at home under close supervision from local health authorities. This case marks a significant development as the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and prevention measures.

Mpox, a contagious disease caused by the MPXV virus, spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms include skin rashes, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general fatigue, which can last up to four weeks.

In response to the confirmed case, DOH-CHD CaLaBaRZon has reiterated the importance of adhering to health protocols to prevent further spread. These include practicing proper respiratory etiquette, frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, and ensuring the cleanliness of personal items like bedding and clothing.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical consultation if symptoms such as a sore throat, headaches, or a rash resembling pimples occur. The DOH also reminds individuals to contact the National Patient Navigation and Referral Center at hotline 1555 for assistance.

Supportive care, including hydration, nutrition, and symptom management, remains the primary treatment for Mpox. The DOH emphasizes the importance of community awareness in preventing the spread of the virus, urging everyone to stay informed about the risks and take proactive measures to protect themselves and others.
