Cabuyao, Laguna – On October 8, 2024, the final day for filing Certificates of Candidacy (COC), Atty. Leif Opiña officially submitted his bid to run for mayor of Cabuyao. The filing was marked by a mass held at San Bartolome Church in Barangay Marinig, attended by close friends, family, and members of the Opiña-Gecolea team.

In his emotional speech, Atty. Opiña reflected on the struggles he endured as vice mayor under the current administration. He recounted facing budget cuts and a lack of recognition from council members, but said these experiences strengthened his resolve to push for genuine change in the city.

Atty. Opiña pledged to restore vibrancy to Cabuyao, starting with the reopening of the CI Tech educational institution. He also vowed to eliminate tuition fees for students attending Pamantasan ng Cabuyao, aiming to make higher education more accessible to the city’s youth.

Another key promise from Opiña is the expansion of the city’s scholarship program. He emphasized the need to increase opportunities for deserving students, ensuring that more young Cabuyeños have access to quality education and a brighter future.

Healthcare is another cornerstone of Opiña’s platform. He highlighted his plan to reopen the long-delayed Cabuyao Hospital and ensure that local pharmacies are well-stocked with essential medicines for the sick and elderly.

Additionally, he expressed his intent to resume the operations of the city’s unfinished dialysis center, which would provide vital care to residents suffering from kidney-related illnesses. This, he said, would be a significant step towards improving the city’s health services.

Former Mayor Atty. Rommel Gecolea, who is running for vice mayor alongside Opiña, voiced his strong support. Gecolea shared his commitment to continuing his legacy of service, focusing on two principles: “compassion” for the needy and “conscience” in fulfilling the city’s obligations to its people.
