MassKara Festival 2024: A Colorful Celebration of Bacolod’s History and Resilience

Bacolod City, October 2024 – The streets of Bacolod City are once again filled with color and joy as the 45th MassKara Festival takes place from October 11 to 27, 2024. This year’s theme, the “Sapphire Edition,” celebrates the rich history and transformation of the festival, which began as a symbol of resilience in the face of hardship.

The MassKara Festival was first held in 1980 during a difficult time for Bacolod. The local economy was suffering due to a global drop in sugar prices, which was the region’s main industry, and the city was further devastated by the sinking of the MV Don Juan, a tragic ferry accident that claimed many lives. In response, the local government and artists like Ely Santiago, who coined the name “MassKara” from the words “mass” (a crowd of people) and “kara” (Spanish for face), organized a festival to lift the spirits of the people. The festival became a powerful representation of the Bacolodnon spirit—facing adversity with a smile.

Today, MassKara is one of the Philippines’ most famous festivals, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world. Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez emphasized that this year’s event will be bigger than ever, with international performances and activities designed to attract global attention. The festival has evolved into a month-long celebration, highlighting the city’s growth and unity.

The 2024 festival will feature street and arena dance competitions, where performers don vibrant, smiling masks, accompanied by music and choreography that showcase Bacolod’s cultural heritage. These competitions will take place across several iconic locations, including the Bacolod City Government Center, the Bacolod Public Plaza, the Lacson Tourism Strip, and Megaworld’s The Upper East.

Alongside the dance contests, major events include the MassKaralympics (October 4-25), the Miss Bacolod MassKara Finals Night (October 19), the MassKarade Ball (October 25), and the spectacular Electric MassKara Parade on October 26.

From its origins as a beacon of hope to its current status as a global event, the MassKara Festival remains a symbol of Bacolod’s enduring spirit, continuing to put smiles on the faces of people from all walks of life.
