Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has championed the conversion of Sulu State College in Jolo into a full-fledged state university. On January 22, 2025, Cayetano submitted Senate Committee Report No. 467, supporting House Bill No. 9334, which aims to establish Sulu State University.

The proposed university seeks to advance higher education in the region by providing specialized programs in agriculture, engineering, and education, along with cutting-edge research opportunities. As the only state university and college (SUC) in Sulu, this upgrade is expected to offer quality tertiary education to underprivileged yet deserving students in the province.

Cayetano, chair of the Senate Committees on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education, highlighted education’s vital role in national progress. He drew comparisons to Vietnam’s success in Southeast Asia, warning that the Philippines risks being left behind without greater investment in education.

“If we don’t change our attitude towards education investment, we might be left behind even further in the next 20 years,” Cayetano emphasized.

Last year, the senator committed to filing bills aimed at creating new state colleges, upgrading existing ones, and converting satellite campuses to main campuses. He has also championed reforms like granting institutional autonomy to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).

As Senate deliberations on Committee Report No. 467 approach, Cayetano reiterated his call for increased education funding, urging a cultural shift in prioritizing the nation’s youth.

“It’s time to invest in education for the future of our country,” Cayetano stated, emphasizing the need for action over rhetoric.

With Sulu State University poised to transform higher education in the region, Cayetano’s initiative stands as a beacon of hope for students striving for better opportunities in life.
