Journalists strengthen digital safety and cybercrime awareness at Calamba seminar

Calamba City, Laguna – IN a bid to equip media professionals with crucial knowledge on digital safety, cybercrime prevention, and financial literacy, a seminar titled “Digital Information Dissemination, Cybercrime Awareness & Prevention, and Digital Financial Literacy” was successfully held at Hotel Marciano on March 7, 2025.

Co-organized by CoinEx Filipino Community—led by Country Manager Dell Omasas—and the Laguna Media Corps, the event gathered 40 journalists from various parts of Calabarzon. The seminar aimed to enhance their understanding of responsible digital communication, fake news awareness, and cybersecurity strategies, reinforcing their role as credible sources of information in the digital age.

Veteran broadcast journalist Felix Tambongco of DZRJ AM Radio Station kicked off the event with an in-depth discussion on fake news awareness. He emphasized the distinction between misinformation (false information spread by individuals who believe it to be true) and disinformation (deliberate spread of false information to deceive). Tambongco also outlined different types of misleading content, including satire, false connections, manipulated content, and fabricated news, urging journalists to uphold accuracy and integrity in their reporting.

Further strengthening the seminar’s impact, the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 4A (RACU4A), under the direct supervision of PCOL Irene C. Cena, conducted a lecture on Cybercrime Awareness and Prevention. The session, led by Police Staff Sgt. Cherry Pie Azarcon and Police Master Sgt. Ruffa Lachica , focused on emerging cyber threats, responsible online behavior, and ways to safeguard against digital fraud. The initiative also served as an opportunity to enhance police-community relations, ensuring that both media professionals and law enforcement work together to combat cyber-related crimes.

The seminar concluded with a strong call to action: media professionals must remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation while adapting to the ever-evolving digital landscape. With a renewed commitment to truth and cybersecurity, participants left the event better prepared to navigate the complexities of modern media.
