CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara personally visited Calamba City on Monday, February 9, to inspect the implementation of the BINHI Reading Program, an initiative aimed at strengthening literacy and improving reading comprehension among young learners from Kindergarten to Elementary level.

During his visit to Calamba Central Elementary School, Secretary Angara expressed his full support for the program, emphasizing the importance of early intervention in ensuring that no child is left behind in the learning process. The BINHI Program, implemented in partnership with the private BINHI Foundation, focuses on developing strong reading foundations that are essential for academic success.

Secretary Angara also met with local officials to discuss key education programs that will further enhance the quality of learning and skills development among young Calambeños.

He conveyed his appreciation to Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal for the city government’s continued efforts in advancing the education sector. According to the Education Secretary, strong support from local government units plays a crucial role in the success of programs like BINHI, which prioritize the welfare and future of students.

In response, Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal reaffirmed the city’s commitment to working closely with DepEd, particularly in constructing new school buildings in barangays that need additional educational facilities. He cited the recent inauguration of the Kay Anlog National High School building as part of Calamba’s ongoing investments in education.

Mayor Rizal also highlighted that the city government continues to distribute annual learner’s kits to more than 200,000 students across Kindergarten, Elementary, High School, and Calamba City College, ensuring that learners have the resources they need to succeed.

Meanwhile, kindergarten teacher Ms. Ivy Eroquero underscored the positive impact of the BINHI Reading Program, noting its significant contribution to improving children’s reading comprehension. She added that the initiative supports not only students but also teachers through training, enhanced learning strategies, and wider access to educational resources.

Secretary Angara’s visit also gave teachers and students the opportunity to engage with him directly, raising questions and sharing insights on issues affecting the education sector.

Joining the DepEd Secretary during the visit were Calamba City Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal, Calamba City Lone District Representative Charisse Anne Hernandez-Alcantara, and DepEd CALABARZON Regional Director Alberto Escobarte.

With the combined efforts of DepEd, the Calamba City government, and education partners, the BINHI Reading Program is expected to further empower young learners and strengthen Calamba’s commitment to quality education for all.
