CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – Pandemic Hero Nancy Dimaranan represented Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal during the solemn commemoration of Doce de Pebrero on February 12, 2026, held at Barangay Lingga, as the city paid tribute to the thousands of Calambeños who perished on February 12, 1945.


Speaking on behalf of Mayor Rizal, Dimaranan emphasized the enduring legacy of sacrifice and resilience that continues to define the people of Calamba.


“Isang maka-Diyos at maka-Rizal na hapon po sa ating lahat,” she began, setting a reflective tone for the gathering.


She reminded attendees that history is not merely a lesson confined to textbooks but a living legacy carried by every Calambeño. “Ang kasaysayan po ay hindi lamang mga pahina sa aklat na binubuklat kapag may pagsusulit o okasyon; ito po ay isang buhay na dugong dumadaloy at nananatili sa ating mga ugat sa bawat araw na tayo ay humihinga bilang mga Calambeño,” Dimaranan said.


The Doce de Pebrero marks one of the darkest days in the city’s history, when more than 2,000 residents were massacred at St. John the Baptist Church and in various parts of Calamba during World War II. Dimaranan described the occasion not only as a time for mourning but as a testament to the city’s unwavering spirit.


“Ang Doce de Pebrero ay hindi lamang petsa ng pagluluksa at pag-alala… Ito po ay simbolo ng ating katatagan,” she stressed, honoring the bravery of those who refused to surrender in the face of violence.


Representing Mayor Rizal’s message of unity and forward-looking leadership, Dimaranan encouraged residents to transform remembrance into inspiration.
“Ang pag-alala nating ito ay hindi upang manatili sa pait ng kahapon, kundi upang kumuha ng lakas para sa bukas. Tayo po ang katibayan na ang karahasan ay kailanman hindi magtatagumpay laban sa pagkakaisa,” she said.


She concluded with a call for every Calambeño to carry the dignity of their heritage in safeguarding the future. “Baunin po natin ang dangal ng pagiging Calambeño—isang lahing marunong lumingon, marunong rumespeto sa pinagmulan, at may determinasyong protektahan ang bukas ng susunod na henerasyon.”
The annual observance of Doce de Pebrero stands as a powerful reminder of Calamba’s painful past and its continuing commitment under Mayor Ross Rizal’s leadership to unity, peace, and progress for the next generation.
