NPA Anniversary Marred by Military Offensive, Rebel Captured, Officer Killed

Laguna, Philippines — March 30, 2026 — Government forces captured a member of the communist terrorist group New People’s Army (NPA) following a fierce armed encounter in San Jose, Occidental, Mindoro on Sunday, March 29, as intensified military operations coincided with the group’s anniversary.

According to reports from the 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade, troops from the 68th Infantry (Kaagapay) Battalion were conducting pursuit operations in Sitio Salafay, Barangay Monteclaro when they encountered around 15 NPA members. A firefight ensued for approximately 20 minutes before the insurgents retreated.
Following the clash, government troops recovered an M16 rifle, a hand grenade, and components used for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the encounter site.

The latest engagement comes days after a previous firefight on March 24 in the same barangay, involving the same military unit. That earlier clash also resulted in the recovery of a firearm, along with bloodstains at the scene suggesting possible casualties among the fleeing rebels.
However, the recent operation came at a heavy cost. 1st Lieutenant Dean Oyando was killed in action while leading his troops in pursuit of the enemy. Two other soldiers were wounded, with one evacuated to the AFP Medical Center for further treatment.

In a statement, Colonel Michael Aquino of the 2nd Division Public Affairs Office underscored that sustained military operations are steadily weakening the armed group’s capabilities in the area.
“Our continuous operations have undeniably disrupted the armed group’s movements and significantly diminished their capabilities. The terrorist NPA cannot hide from the long arms of the government,” Aquino said.

He also paid tribute to the fallen officer, honoring Oyando’s bravery and commitment to duty.
“1st Lieutenant Dean Oyando embodied the courage and dedication of the Filipino soldier. His ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace strengthens our resolve to continue the mission he bravely carried out—to protect our communities and secure lasting peace,” he added.

Aquino emphasized that the timing of the operation dealt a significant blow to the group, as it coincided with their anniversary.

“This is a major disruption to their plans. We are seeing their ability to operate steadily reduced as our operations intensify,” he said.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces by reporting any information that may aid ongoing operations.

Military pursuit operations continue as troops press forward against fleeing NPA members while ensuring the safety and security of communities in affected areas.
