CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — Roseller ‘Ross’ H. Rizal expressed strong support for the historic initiative led by Leandro Leviste to acquire and preserve the former residence of José Rizal in Wilhelmsfeld—a place closely linked to the national hero’s life and literary legacy.


The mayor said the City of Calamba joins the significant move to protect the house where Rizal once lived while he was in Germany. The property holds historical importance as it was during his stay in Wilhelmsfeld that Rizal completed his famous novel, El Filibusterismo, one of the most influential works that exposed the injustices of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.


Mayor Rizal recalled that he had previously visited Wilhelmsfeld as a guest of the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, making the initiative even more meaningful for him as the leader of the hometown of the national hero.


The mayor also highlighted that Calamba City maintains a Sister-City Agreement with Wilhelmsfeld, further strengthening the historical and cultural ties between the two communities connected by Rizal’s legacy.


“This purchase is a vital step in preserving this historic site and ensuring that the memory and inspiration of Rizal will continue to live on for future generations,” Mayor Rizal said.


He also extended his gratitude to Congressman Leviste and his mother, Loren Legarda, for their continued efforts to promote and safeguard Philippine history and culture.


The preservation of the Wilhelmsfeld house is seen as an important step in honoring the enduring legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal, whose life and works continue to inspire Filipinos around the world.
