Government forces engaged suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in a brief but intense firefight on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, resulting in the recovery of firearms and other war materiel in a remote area of the province.

According to the Philippine Army, troops from the 68th Infantry (Kaagapay) Battalion, 1st Infantry (Always First) Battalion, and the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting focused military operations when they encountered a group of armed rebels at Sitio Danlog in Barangay Monteclaro, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

The exchange of gunfire lasted approximately 15 minutes before the insurgents withdrew from the area. Government troops immediately launched pursuit operations, leading to the discovery of one M653 rifle, a short magazine loaded with seven rounds of live ammunition, a rifle scope, and a backpack containing personal belongings believed to belong to the fleeing rebels.

No casualties were reported on the side of government forces. However, troops observed scattered bloodstains at what appeared to be a temporary rebel encampment, indicating that some members of the insurgent group may have been wounded during the encounter.
Brigadier General Melencio Ragudo, commander of the 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade, said the incident reflects the sustained gains of ongoing military operations in Occidental Mindoro.

“Our troops on the ground remain relentless in pursuing these terrorist elements. This engagement and the recovery of their equipment show that their capability to sow terror continues to weaken as we sustain pressure in the area,” Ragudo stated.
Meanwhile, Major General Ramon Zagala, commander of the 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division, emphasized that intensified operations across their area of responsibility are crucial in ensuring long-term peace and security.

“We will continue to intensify our operations to ensure that these groups can no longer threaten our communities. Every encounter and recovery brings us closer to lasting peace, as we deny them the ability to regroup and operate,” Zagala said.

Authorities confirmed that pursuit operations are ongoing as troops continue to track down the fleeing insurgents and secure nearby communities from potential threats.
