Calamba City, Philippines — A powerful magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake struck southern Mindanao on Monday morning, leaving at least 19 people dead, injuring more than 100 others, and causing widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure across several provinces.

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time on June 8, 2026. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake’s epicenter was located about 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani, at a depth of 33 kilometers. PHIVOLCS said the earthquake was generated by subduction activity along the Cotabato Trench.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that 16 fatalities were recorded in the Soccsksargen region, while three others were reported in the Davao Region. A total of 134 individuals were treated for injuries, many of them students who were caught in stampedes as the earthquake struck on the first day of classes.

The strongest shaking was recorded at Intensity VII (Destructive) in General Santos City. Authorities reported significant structural damage, including the collapse of a three-story building that housed a Jollibee fast-food restaurant. Heavy damage was also reported at St. Marcellin Champagnat Hall of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University. Essential services, including electricity, water, and internet connectivity, were disrupted in Koronadal City and nearby municipalities.

Following the earthquake, PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami warning for several southern provinces, prompting residents in coastal communities to evacuate to higher ground. Tsunami waves reaching up to 1.4 meters were recorded along the coastlines of Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat before authorities officially lifted the warning later in the afternoon. Neighboring Indonesia also issued temporary tsunami watches for its northern islands.

As of midday Monday, the Philippine Seismic Network had recorded 138 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.7. In response to the disaster, local government units suspended classes and government work in affected areas to allow engineers to conduct safety inspections of public buildings and critical infrastructure.
