Philippines — A commemorative marker honoring the historic 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo was formally unveiled at the Clark Parade Grounds, CLARK FREEPORT ZONE, Pampanga, on June 9, 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of one of the Philippines’ most significant natural disasters and celebrating the region’s journey of resilience, recovery, and transformation.

The memorial marker was a collaborative initiative of the Holy Angel University–Center for Kapampangan Studies (HAU-CKS), the Clark Development Corporation (CDC), the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), and Mekeni Food Corporation, which represented the Central Luzon business sector during the ceremonial unveiling.

Among the distinguished guests was former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who joined CDC President and CEO Agnes VST Devanadera, officials from the local governments of Angeles City and Mabalacat City, as well as representatives from the academic, scientific, and private sectors in commemorating the occasion.

Representing the business community was Mekeni Food Corporation President Pruds Garcia, who highlighted how the Mt. Pinatubo eruption not only altered the physical landscape of Central Luzon but also shaped the future of many enterprises that later contributed to the region’s recovery and growth.

Mekeni, which began as a modest backyard business in Pampanga, was among the local companies that suffered major setbacks due to the eruption and its aftermath. Yet the challenges brought by the disaster ultimately became a defining moment for the company, transforming its commitment from mere survival into service and purposeful growth. Over the years, the company developed into a nationally recognized food manufacturing brand while remaining firmly rooted in community development and regional pride.

In his statement, Garcia stressed that the story of Mt. Pinatubo is closely intertwined with Central Luzon’s resilience. He noted that the disaster served as both a challenge and a driving force for businesses that chose not only to rebuild their operations but also help restore lives and strengthen communities.

The unveiling of the commemorative marker serves as a tribute to those affected by the eruption while recognizing the long-term recovery efforts made possible through cooperation among government agencies, academic institutions, scientific organizations, and the private sector.

Beyond preserving historical memory, the initiative also underscores new opportunities for collaboration in heritage tourism, public education, and strategic communication as Clark continues to strengthen its role as a center for history, innovation, and sustainable development.

For Mekeni, its participation in the project reflects a continuing commitment to go beyond business success. The company stands as an example of how adversity can inspire a lasting sense of purpose, where progress is measured not only by growth but also by contributions to community rebuilding and regional identity.

As Central Luzon commemorates 35 years since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the marker stands as a lasting reminder that from devastation emerged a shared legacy of resilience. Stories such as Mekeni’s continue to demonstrate how rebuilding after adversity can become the foundation of an enduring legacy.
