The Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division scored a significant victory in the ongoing battle against insurgency, as two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were neutralized in a fierce encounter in Guinayangan, Quezon on Thursday, March 28, 2024. The clash, which lasted for 20 minutes, occurred when soldiers from the 85th Infantry “Sandiwa” Battalion engaged armed individuals affiliated with the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee at Barangay San Jose.

During the intense firefight, two rebels were neutralized, and the state forces successfully seized three high-powered firearms from the insurgents. However, the victory did not come without a cost, as one soldier sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

This recent confrontation follows a previous skirmish on March 25, where troops encountered NPAs in the neighboring municipality of Calauag. During that encounter, one rebel surrendered after fleeing the area, while the soldiers recovered additional war materiel, including an M16 rifle and three Anti-Personnel Mines.

In response to the recent success, Maj. Gen. Roberto S. Capulong, the commander of the 2ID, expressed his condolences to the families of the neutralized communist terrorists. He emphasized that the slain rebels could have chosen a path of peaceful integration into society if they had decided to surrender instead of engaging in armed conflict.

Maj. Gen. Capulong also issued a stern warning to the remaining NPA members, urging them to abandon the violent ideologies of the insurgency. He emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to securing Southern Tagalog from the grip of insurgency and reiterated the importance of choosing peace over conflict.

The successful operations conducted by the 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division underscore the government’s determination to eradicate insurgency and establish lasting peace and stability in the region. With each encounter, the Philippine Army continues to demonstrate its readiness and resolve to confront threats to national security and uphold the rule of law.
