The Social Security System (SSS) today honored the late Sammy Santos, veteran journalist and its Vice President for Public Affairs and Special Events Division, who passed away on Saturday, June 29. Santos, aged 63, died due to complications following heart bypass surgery performed on June 5 at the Philippine Heart Center.

Santos joined the SSS in February 2024, bringing his extensive media experience to enhance the promotion and publicity of SSS programs and services. His contributions were quickly felt within the organization, leveraging his journalistic background to boost the agency’s public engagement efforts.

Expressing his condolences, SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Rolando Ledesma Macasaet reflected on Santos’ legacy. “Today, I am deeply saddened to announce that I have not only lost a brilliant colleague at the SSS but a great friend whom I have known since childhood days in Zamboanga City and a grade school and high school classmate as well. I want to offer prayers of strength to his wife, Julie, and their children as they go through this difficult time,” Macasaet said.

Santos and Macasaet shared a long history, both hailing from Zamboanga City and attending Ateneo de Zamboanga University together from grade school through high school, graduating in 1973 and 1977 respectively.

Before his tenure at SSS, Santos had an illustrious career in media relations. He served as Media Director of the Senate of the Philippines from 2004 until his retirement in 2023. His journalistic career also included roles as a reporter and editor for prominent newspapers such as the Philippine Star, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Manila Chronicle, and the Daily Globe.

The wake for Santos will be held at the Aeternitas Chapel & Columbarium in Commonwealth, Quezon City starting on July 2. His inurnment is scheduled for July 5 at 9:00 a.m. at the same memorial chapel.

Santos leaves behind a legacy of dedication and excellence in journalism and public service, remembered fondly by colleagues, friends, and family.
