Calamba City, Laguna — In a powerful demonstration of its commitment to public health and the fight against tobacco use, the City Health Services Office (CHSO) and the Smoke-Free Baguio City initiative conducted a high-profile ceremonial destruction of cigarettes and e-cigarettes worth over P2 million at Malcolm Square. The event aimed to raise awareness and reinforce the city’s dedication to safeguarding its citizens, particularly the youth, from the harmful effects of tobacco products.

The ceremony, led by CHSO head Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, drew significant attention as she emphasized the ongoing efforts of Baguio City to eradicate smoking and ensure a healthier environment. “Our goal is to create a smoke-free Baguio, where our citizens can breathe clean air and live without the threat of respiratory diseases,” Dr. Brillantes stated in her welcoming remarks.

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, the chairperson of the Committee on Health and Sanitation, echoed this sentiment, urging the community to unite in the effort to make Baguio a truly smoke-free city. “We must work together to make this vision a reality. Let us breathe Baguio—stop smoking, and stop vaping,” Councilor Tabanda appealed to the audience.

The significant cache of cigarettes and vapes destroyed during the event had been confiscated over the past several years by the Smoke-Free Task Force from schools and unauthorized vendors. These items, now considered hazardous waste, will be disposed of following the strict guidelines set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

This event marks a critical step in Baguio City’s ongoing campaign against tobacco use and highlights the city’s leadership in public health initiatives aimed at protecting its residents from the dangers of smoking and vaping.
