Calamba, Philippines – The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has officially announced a 30% increase in the rates of its benefit packages, effective immediately. This move is part of the broader implementation of the Universal Health Care (UHC) law, aiming to reduce the financial burden on Filipinos seeking healthcare services.

PhilHealth President and CEO Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. made the announcement during a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing, emphasizing the necessity of the increase. “The adjustment is intended to address the growing costs of healthcare and ensure that more Filipinos can access quality medical services without undue financial strain,” Ledesma said.

During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, a PIA event with PhilHealth 4A Acting Regional Vice President Edwin M. Oriña, MD, Oriña also highlighted the 30% increase in case rate packages. He noted that this adjustment would significantly benefit a wide range of patients, providing better access to essential health services across various regions.

Additionally, PhilHealth announced the inclusion of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in its list of covered illnesses. Oriña confirmed that PhilHealth would now provide financial assistance to patients diagnosed with mpox. “Mpox patients can now receive essential medical care without the financial burden associated with hospitalization and treatments,” Oriña stated, underscoring the agency’s commitment to addressing emerging health concerns.

The 30% increase will apply to various benefit packages, including inpatient and outpatient care, as well as special programs. With the earlier 30% increase implemented this year, the total hike in benefit packages for 2024 will reach 60%.

Ledesma further revealed plans for another 30% increase by the end of the year, stating, “We are committed to further improvements. Another increase will be in place on or before Christmas Day.”

This significant boost in benefits, along with the inclusion of mpox, is expected to provide much-needed relief to millions of Filipinos relying on PhilHealth for their medical needs, especially as healthcare costs continue to rise.
