Historic Victory: John Andrei Samadio Becomes First Asian Filipino Champion at 7th Combat Wrestling Championship

Los Baños, Laguna – Mr. John Andrei Samadio, a 23-year-old athlete from Tuntungin-Putho, Los Baños, Laguna has proudly represented the Philippines at the 𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 held in Honjo City, Japan on August 4, 2024. Demonstrating exceptional skill, perseverance, and sportsmanship, Mr. Samadio earned a prestigious 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 in this highly competitive event.

Samadio discovered his passion for combat wrestling at the age of 8, winning a bronze medal in his first competition. Since then, he has consistently participated in various competitions, achieving multiple victories. Inspired by his father, a former mixed martial arts athlete and now his coach, Samadio’s dedication to the sport shines through.

Despite facing financial challenges to compete in Japan, Mr. Samadio expressed his gratitude to the Members of the Sanggunian Bayan, headed by Hon. Vice Mayor Josephine “Baby” Sumangil-Evangelista, for their generous support.

“I want to make my country proud by competing on both national and international stages,” said Samadio during an interview at the Sangguniang Bayan Session Hall last September 16. His family and friends celebrated his achievements, proud of the honor he brought to the Philippines with his silver medal. Continuing his commitment to the sport, Mr. Samadio aims to represent the Philippines in future international competitions.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor “Baby” Sumangil Evangelista gives message to Silver Medalist, “Your success not only brings pride to yourself and your family but also serves as an inspiration to our community and aspiring athletes. You have shown us all what it means to strive for excellence and to represent our country on an international stage. Congratulations, we are all proud of you and look forward to seeing what you will accomplish in the next competitions.”, Evangelista stated.

On September 16, 2024, during the Regular Session of the Sangguniang Bayan, a Resolution No. 2024-249 was passed, commending Mr. Samadio and announcing his appointment as Head Coach of the Los Baños Wrestling Team.
