Lito Lapid Pushes Tourism as Key to Reducing Unemployment in the Philippines

Senator Lito Lapid emphasized the potential of tourism as a solution to unemployment during the 25th national convention of the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, on October 10. He witnessed the awarding of financial assistance to two beneficiaries of ATOP’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, each receiving ₱50,000. The recipients were the Cooperative of Women in Health and Development (COWHED) in Lake Sebu and the Fu Yabing Dulo Community in Sitio Amgoo, Polomolok.

Lapid, together with his son Mark Lapid, Chief Operating Officer of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), and ATOP National President Junel Ann Divinagracia, led the ceremony. He highlighted that promoting tourism can significantly boost the economy and create job opportunities, especially through the “One Town, One Product” program.

As chair of the Senate Committee on Tourism, Lapid has been a strong advocate for Republic Act 9593 of 2009, which aims to enhance tourism in rural areas to generate employment and attract local and foreign visitors. He noted that Mindanao’s tourism sector has seen substantial growth due to improved peace and order in the region, shedding its previous image of conflict.
