Philippines – Senator Alan Peter Cayetano reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the New Senate Building (NSB) is completed with the highest standards of quality while maintaining cost-efficiency, amid concerns over its escalating budget.

Speaking at a meet-and-greet event with Radio Mindanao Networks (RMN) station managers at the Golden Phoenix Hotel, Cayetano addressed questions regarding the controversial project. Initially estimated at P8 billion, the project’s budget has now surpassed P30 billion.

“It’s going to be a beautiful building, maganda ang concept. Kaya lang realistically nagkaproblema, kasi nga from as low as P8 billion, lumalampas na [ngayon] ng P30 billion,” Cayetano admitted, noting the importance of managing public funds responsibly.

As chair of the Senate Committee on Accounts, Cayetano pledged transparency, vowing to submit a comprehensive report to the Senate based on thorough reviews and consultations. He acknowledged that the NSB is shaping up to be one of the most expensive buildings in the country, even outpacing the costs of five-star hotels.

With the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) expected to finalize the project’s plans by January 2025, Cayetano assured the public of his dedication to accountability throughout the process.

“I promised to be transparent sa Senate, so I will not hide anything. My role is to fix the plan, get the senators to approve, then finish and put it up,” he said.

Cayetano also revealed that DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan informed his office that Phase 3 of the project could be completed in two to three years if the bidding process is expedited.

“We had an intensive meeting recently to review the design plans, gather feedback, and set a realistic budget. Why do I want it finished? Because I don’t want to pass the accountability,” Cayetano emphasized.

As the project progresses, Cayetano’s leadership is expected to help restore public trust in the Senate’s infrastructure projects, ensuring the NSB serves as a symbol of the legislature’s commitment to the Filipino people.
