NPA Member Killed in Batangas Clash with Army’s 2ID

Calamba City, Laguna – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) member was killed in an encounter with the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division (2ID) in Barangay Balibago, Lobo, Batangas, on Wednesday, December 4.

Troops from the 59th Infantry Battalion, under the 202nd Infantry Brigade, were conducting routine security patrols when they were ambushed by armed rebels, prompting a 20-minute firefight. The rebels fled the scene, leaving behind the body of an NPA member identified as Rey Delos Santos, also known by his aliases “Japeth,” “Roy,” and “Ren.”

One soldier sustained minor injuries during the clash. The Army recovered two high-powered firearms, two anti-personnel mines, and a magazine from the encounter site.

Maj. Gen. Cerilo Balaoro Jr., Commander of the 2ID, expressed regret over the loss of life but reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to peace and security. “While the soldiers do not rejoice in the deaths of our fellow Filipinos, we have a solemn duty to uphold peace, protect our people, and enforce the rule of law,” he said.

Maj. Gen. Balaoro urged remaining NPA members to surrender and avail themselves of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which offers financial and livelihood assistance to former rebels.

“This is another step toward weakening the dwindling presence of terrorists in Batangas,” said a former rebel now assisting the government in its peace campaign.

The Army assured the public of its continued efforts to ensure the safety and development of communities across Southern Tagalog and nearby regions.
