Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has expressed his support for postponing the first regular elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), emphasizing the need for more preparation time and sustained peace in the region.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cayetano stressed that delaying the elections—currently scheduled for May 11, 2025—would be a more practical approach to ensuring long-term stability in BARMM. He backed Senate Bill No. 2924 (under Committee Report No. 466), which proposes moving the elections to October 30, 2025.

“It would be more logical to give them this entire year to prepare for the elections and allow them to set long-term targets for their region and budget—targets that will shape the region in the next 5 to 10 years,” Cayetano said during a plenary session on January 28, 2025.

The senator also highlighted the potential cost savings for the government, stating that postponing the elections could save billions of pesos.

Despite being a former critic of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, Cayetano emphasized his commitment to peace in the region, recalling his past debates with BARMM leaders.

“I’m glad that when we shook hands now with the Bangsamoro government, it was very warm because once upon a time we were debating harshly against each other,” he shared.

Cayetano acknowledged the difficulties faced by BARMM leaders in implementing reforms in a historically challenging region.

“The reality is that if we go back to the status quo ante before the peace agreement, it would be dangerous for all of us,” he warned, urging continuous investment in the peace process.

With growing support for the postponement, lawmakers are expected to deliberate further on the measure to ensure that BARMM is fully prepared for its first regular elections.
