Mayor Ross Rizal Leads the 80th Anniversary of Doce de Pebrero in Calamba

CALAMBA CITY – Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal, together with the Calamba City Government, led the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Doce de Pebrero today in Barangay Real.

During a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, officials and residents honored the sacrifice of 2,000 Calambeño men who lost their lives at the hands of Japanese forces during World War II. Their bravery, aimed at protecting their families and homeland, remains etched in the hearts of every Calambeño.

The Tragic History of Doce de Pebrero

On February 12, 1945, one of the darkest days in Calamba’s history unfolded as Japanese troops, in retaliation against Filipino resistance forces, carried out a brutal massacre. Around 2,000 Calambeño men were forcibly taken from their homes, rounded up, and executed. The massacre, known as Doce de Pebrero, was part of a larger wave of atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army as they retreated in the final months of World War II.

Many of the victims were innocent civilians, including fathers, sons, and brothers, who were accused of aiding Filipino guerrillas. Entire families were left devastated, and the horrors of that day continue to be remembered as a painful yet significant chapter in the city’s history.

Honoring the Legacy

“Though our fellowmen suffered greatly, their courage serves as a lasting reminder of our unity and love for our country,” said Mayor Rizal.

For the past 80 years, Calamba has continued to honor the memory of those who perished through the annual Doce de Pebrero commemoration. This event not only serves as a tribute to the fallen but also as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Calambeño spirit.
