Calamba City, Laguna — The City of Calamba proudly celebrated its 283rd founding anniversary on August 28, 2025, carrying the theme “Calamba: Kadluan ng Pag-asa at Maunlad na Kinabukasan.” held at adjacent historical landmarks, Calamba City College, Banga and St. John the Baptist Parish, Calamba City, Laguna.

As part of the commemoration, the city inaugurated and blessed the newly developed Patio de Rizal and the Tourism Office in Banga, landmarks that highlight Calamba’s rich history and its vision for sustainable progress.

Mayor Roseller “Ross” H. Rizal, together with Vice Mayor Atty. Angelito S. Lazaro Jr., Congresswoman Cha Hernandez-Alcantara, and the Calambagong Pamahalaan, led the celebration with a strong message of unity, patriotism, and development.

“This day is more than a remembrance of the past—it is a journey back to our roots as children of Calamba, the birthplace of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal,” Mayor Rizal emphasized. “Our history lives not only in books, but in every Calambeño whose resilience, hard work, and dignity continue to drive us forward.”

The celebration underscored Calamba’s role as a cradle of heroism and progress, reminding its people that the true strength of the city lies in solidarity and shared commitment to building a brighter future.

With its people at the heart of progress, the city continues to uphold the legacy of Jose Rizal while paving the way toward greater economic and cultural development.

Mabuhay ang Calamba! Mabuhay ang mga Calambeño!

History of Calamba, Laguna

Early Origins
The name Calamba is believed to have come from the phrase “kalan-banga” (clay stove and water jar). During Spanish times, friars asked the natives the name of the place. Thinking they were asked about the items they carried, the locals answered “kalan” and “banga.” The Spaniards combined these into Calamba.

Spanish Era
Founded in 1742, Calamba began as a settlement under the jurisdiction of Tabuco (now Cabuyao). It grew into an important agricultural community, producing rice, sugar, and coconuts. Its fertile lands made it a vital contributor to Laguna’s economy.

Birthplace of a Hero
Calamba is most famously known as the birthplace of Dr. José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda, the national hero of the Philippines, born on June 19, 1861. His life, writings, and ideals continue to shape Calamba’s identity as the “Cradle of a Hero.”

American and Japanese Occupation
During the American era, Calamba flourished with new infrastructure and education systems. In World War II, it suffered destruction under Japanese occupation, but its people’s resilience helped rebuild the community.

Cityhood and Modern Progress
On April 21, 2001, through Republic Act No. 9024, Calamba was officially converted into a component city of Laguna. Since then, it has developed into a major industrial hub, hosting numerous multinational companies and economic zones, earning it the reputation as the “Industrial Capital of the Philippines.”

Today
Calamba is both a historical landmark and an economic powerhouse—a city that honors its heritage while driving progress. With its growing population, thriving industries, and tourism initiatives, it continues to balance modern development with deep cultural roots.
