PhilHealth Launches YAKAP Program for Workers: Bringing Health Services Closer, Strengthening Protection for the Workforce

Calamba City, Philippines — The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) officially launched its Yaman ng Kalusugan Program (YAKAP), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening health protection for employees and making primary care services more accessible in the workplace.

The launch, held at Yazaki-Torres Manufacturing Inc. in Calamba City, was spearheaded by Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma and PhilHealth Acting President and CEO, Dr. Edwin M. Mercado. Both leaders underscored the vital role of health in ensuring a vibrant and productive labor force.

“Health is the foundation of a strong and productive workforce. Through YAKAP, we are making primary care easier, more accessible, and closer to where workers are—be it in offices, schools, or communities,” said Dr. Mercado.

YAKAP carries the tagline “Malayo ka sa Sakit” and aims to encourage Filipinos, especially busy employees, to seek preventive health care even without an existing illness. The program is a concrete step toward fulfilling President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision of Universal Health Care (UHC), ensuring that no worker is left behind in the government’s goal of a healthier nation.

Secretary Laguesma praised the initiative as a timely and strategic response to the health needs of the labor sector, noting that it not only expands service coverage but also improves the quality and delivery of care.

With one-third of a person’s lifetime spent at work, PhilHealth emphasizes that access to health care should not be a privilege but a right—especially for those who drive the country’s economic progress.

By focusing on primary care for the employed sector, YAKAP strengthens the foundation of UHC and builds a more inclusive and effective health care system for every Filipino worker.
