Calamba Operation Turns Tragic: Two Policemen Wounded, 4-Year-Old Hit by Stray Bullet, Gunman Pinned down

Camp BGEN Vicente P Lim—Two police officers from Calamba City Police Station were wounded in an armed encounter during the implementation of a warrant of arrest against Most Wanted Person around 11:00 AM today, October 15.

Based on report, the incident occurred at Purok 5A, Brgy. San Cristobal, Calamba City, Laguna while personnel from the Warrant Section of Calamba City Police Station were about to serve a warrant of arrest against the Provincial Most Wanted Person identified as Regie Anque Abarquez of Brgy. San Cristobal, for the crime of Homicide issued by Hon. Hector De Asis Buenaluz Jr., Presiding Judge of RTC Branch 103, Calamba City, Laguna.

Prior to the arrest of the accused, while the arresting team are approaching the accused’s residence, an unidentified armed men believed to be a cohort of the accused suddenly appeared and opened fire toward the operatives, prompting them to return fire in defense. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the wounding of Police Chief Master Sergeant Alberto Plaza and Police Staff Sergeant John Principe.

Unfortunately, a four-year-year old child was hit by a bullet during a crossfire and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

During the armed confrontation, the police were able to pinned down the gunman, identified as alias “Romar Awid”, while other unidentified cohorts managed to escape the area and are now being the subject of a hot pursuit and dragnet operations by the Calamba City Police Station and the Laguna Police Provincial Office.

PRO CALABARZON Regional Director PBGEN Paul Kenneth T. Lucas commended the bravery of the operating personnel while expressing his condolences to the family of the civilian casualty and his concern for the injured police officers.

“We deeply regret the loss of an innocent life in this tragic incident. Our police officers displayed exceptional courage in the face of danger while lawfully carrying out their duties,” PBGEN Lucas said.

“We will extend full medical and welfare assistance to the injured officers and ensure that justice is served for the victims of this unfortunate incident,” he added.

PBGEN Lucas further directed the conduct of a thorough investigation to determine the full circumstances of the encounter and to prevent similar incidents in future operations. (RPIO4A)
