Cayetano Warns: Corruption Probes Turning into “Circus,” Tarnishing Philippines’ Global Image

Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano warned on Thursday that the Philippines’ reputation abroad is being damaged by the way corruption investigations are being conducted, describing them as “circus-like” spectacles that embarrass millions of Filipinos living and working overseas.

“As a minority leader, my main concern now is how the world sees us,” Cayetano said in a media interview on October 23, 2025. “We have more than ten million Filipinos abroad, and so many traveling every day. But the way we’re doing it, na parang circus araw-araw, lubusan na naaapektuhan ang image ng ating bansa.”

Cayetano criticized what he called the “unsustainable and theatrical” approach of the government in addressing corruption, saying that true reforms and accountability are needed.

“Hindi sustainable y’ung paraan kung paano natin ina-address ang massive corruption… Kailangan may major reforms, tunay na pagbabago, at may makulong,” he emphasized.

The senator noted that the issue has gone beyond politics and now affects how the world views the Filipino people.

“Filipinos who travel are being mocked, and people are saying we’re corrupt. If you count everyone involved, maybe it’s not even ten thousand people. But because of the way this is being handled, all 110 million Filipinos are being judged,” Cayetano said.

He called on government institutions to ensure that investigations are conducted with fairness, integrity, and discipline to restore respect for the rule of law.

“We have to stop being distracted and start being decisive,” Cayetano concluded.
