Philippines — [November 13, 2025] — Former Senate President and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile has passed away at the age of 101, his daughter Katrina Ponce Enrile confirmed in an emotional Facebook post.

“It is with profound love and gratitude that my father, Juan Ponce Enrile, peacefully returned to his Creator on November 13, 2025, at 4:21 p.m., surrounded by our family in the comfort of our home,” Katrina wrote.



Enrile, one of the most influential and controversial figures in Philippine politics, served in government for more than half a century. His career spanned multiple administrations, marked by both power and controversy.

A Storied Political Journey

Born on February 14, 1924, in Cagayan, Enrile rose from humble beginnings to become one of the country’s most enduring statesmen. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Law, he later earned a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School.

He first entered government service under President Ferdinand Marcos, serving as Secretary of Justice and later as Minister of National Defense, where he played a key role during the Martial Law era. Enrile was also a pivotal figure in the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, which led to the ouster of Marcos.

In the post-Marcos years, he remained a towering figure in the Senate, where he served several terms and was elected Senate President in 2008. Known for his sharp intellect and commanding presence, Enrile was both admired and criticized for his political resilience and longevity.

Even in his later years, he continued to serve in government, most recently as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

A Legacy of Complexity

Juan Ponce Enrile leaves behind a complex legacy—one that intertwines power, controversy, and survival. To his supporters, he was a brilliant statesman and defender of the rule of law. To his critics, he symbolized the enduring influence of traditional politics in the Philippines.

Funeral details are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
