PAETE, Laguna — The Climate Change Commission (CCC), together with the National Power Corporation (NPC) and the Municipal Government of Paete, officially opened the 2025 Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week with a large-scale Tree Growing Activity at the Caliraya-Lumot Watershed, reinforcing the country’s push for nature-based climate solutions.

The initiative forms part of the Net Zero Challenge (NZC)—a flagship program of the CCC that strengthens carbon offsetting and enhances community resilience amid intensifying climate impacts, including stronger and more frequent typhoons. The event highlighted the vital role of forests in reducing greenhouse gases, preventing floods and landslides, and protecting vulnerable communities.

CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje, through a message delivered by CCC Deputy Executive Director Atty. Romell Antonio Cuenca, stressed the need to accelerate forest restoration efforts.

“Sa harap ng ganitong mga trahedya, muling nakita ang napakahalagang papel ng ating mga kagubatan — proteksyon laban sa pagbaha at landslide, mabisang carbon sink, at katuwang sa pagpapababa ng temperatura ng ating atmospera,” Borje said.

Launched in August 2023, the NZC aims to plant over 15,000 seedlings across 25 hectares at the Caliraya-Lumot Watershed by 2030, supporting the Philippines’ Paris Agreement commitments. During the kickoff activity, 400 seedlings of banaba, langka, and acacia were planted.

Borje also highlighted President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call for unified climate action.

“Effective climate action requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach—national agencies, LGUs, private sector, youth, and communities working as one.”

NPC President Jericho Jonas B. Nograles, represented by NPC Division Manager Vincent B. Concio, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to the NZC.

“This is more than a day’s gathering—it is a call to action. We reaffirm our responsibility as co-stewards of nature and our duty to strengthen collaboration against climate impacts.”

The reforestation efforts across the 25-hectare area are expected to sequester up to 75.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide, contributing to global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.

Representatives from Holcim Philippines, Ahunan Power, the Philippine Red Cross Region 4A, DENR-PENRO Laguna, DILG Laguna, and various local government, civil society, media, and academic partners also joined the activity.

The CCC emphasized its continued commitment to work closely with local governments, the private sector, and grassroots communities to accelerate the country’s transition toward a climate-smart, resilient, and sustainable future.
