Barzaga Suspended for 60 Days Over ‘Disorderly Conduct’ Linked to Social Media Posts

The House of Representatives has imposed a 60-day suspension without pay on Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga, following the Ethics Committee’s finding that he committed disorderly conduct over a series of social-media posts deemed offensive and damaging to the integrity of the chamber.

The sanction was adopted by the plenary after lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of the committee’s recommendation, which cited Barzaga’s “reckless and inappropriate” online statements. The committee, led by Rep. JC Abalos, ruled that the congressman’s posts violated House rules on decorum and conduct befitting public officials.

Under the suspension, Barzaga will be barred from attending House sessions, participating in committee hearings, and receiving salary and allowances for two months.

Barzaga has publicly accepted the penalty but maintained that he will continue to voice his criticisms of the administration. He also questioned what he described as selective accountability, noting that similar complaints against other lawmakers have not moved as swiftly.

Meanwhile, several legislators who opposed the suspension argued that the action sets a “dangerous precedent” for freedom of expression, while supporters insisted it was necessary to uphold institutional discipline.

The suspension will take effect immediately upon formal issuance of the House order.
