Philippines — Davaoeños will enjoy smoother travel and improved access across the city’s coastal areas as the ₱3.1-billion Bucana Bridge is now completed and set to open before Christmas, following an inspection by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday.

The newly built four-lane, six-span extradosed bridge—stretching 480.20 meters with an additional 1,340 meters of approach roads—forms a major link between the eastern and western coastal zones of Davao City. The project aims to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and expand economic opportunities by providing alternative routes toward business districts, tourism hubs, and essential services.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the President ordered the acceleration of the project, ensuring that construction adhered to the highest standards of quality and structural integrity. The bridge also features a shared-use path and pedestrian walkway to ensure safe mobility for non-motorized travelers.

Funded through China’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), the Davao River Bridge—popularly known as Bucana Bridge—is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and support long-term economic growth.

During the event, President Marcos apologized to the public for the challenges brought about by the ongoing flood control scandal, likening the issue to an illness that must be addressed head-on. He emphasized that investigations were necessary to “remove the cancer” affecting public trust and governance.

The President’s appearance in Davao, considered the political stronghold of the Duterte family, also drew attention, signaling that key infrastructure projects will continue despite political tensions.

The Bucana Bridge stands as a major infrastructure milestone for Mindanao, with its opening anticipated to bring a more convenient, safe, and progressive travel experience for thousands of motorists and commuters daily.
