In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Russia has summoned the U.S. ambassador and vowed retaliation after blaming Washington for a deadly strike on the strategic port city of Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. The attack, which occurred on June 24, 2024, left at least four people dead and over 150 injured. Russian authorities allege that U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) rockets were used in the strike, although NBC News has not independently verified the type of weapons involved.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a stern statement accusing the U.S. of bearing equal responsibility with Kyiv for what it termed an “atrocity.” Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014 in a move not recognized by the international community, sees the attack as a direct affront and has promised a response. The governor of Sevastopol has declared a day of mourning, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
This incident highlights the ongoing and severe tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the United States playing a significant role due to its support for Ukraine. The Kremlin’s promise of retaliation has sparked fears of further escalation in the region, as the world watches the unfolding developments with growing concern.
