In a recent clash between government troops and New People’s Army (NPA) members, soldiers from the 1st Infantry (Always First) Battalion engaged in a 20-minute gunbattle with NPA members from Komiteng Larangang Guerilya (KLG) NARCISO in Dingalan, Aurora. The skirmish occurred on April 21, 2024, prompted by reports of NPA terrorists extorting food and other essentials from residents of So Pinamaypayan, Barangay Umiray in Dingalan.

Upon arriving at the reported location, the troops were met with gunfire from armed NPA terrorists, initiating a firefight. Despite the exchange of fire, the NPA members eventually retreated, leaving behind one wounded comrade, later identified as Manilyn “Manene” Dela Cruz, also known as MIYA and MAXENE. Dela Cruz is associated with PLATUN JULIAN, KLG NARCISO, a group responsible for numerous attacks in Quezon, Rizal, and Bulacan provinces.

Following Dela Cruz’s capture, the soldiers provided immediate first aid before rushing her to Fort Magsaysay Army Station Hospital in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, for further treatment. Dela Cruz is also wanted for three outstanding Warrants of Arrest (WOAs), including charges of Frustrated Murder, Attempted Murder, and Direct Assault Upon an Agent of a Person in Authority.

Brig. Gen. Cerilo C Balaoro Jr., PA, Commander of the 202nd Infantry (Unifier) Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism during the skirmish. He also expressed gratitude to the local community for providing vital information that led to the operation’s success. BGen Balaoro Jr emphasized the importance of collaboration between the military and local communities to thwart NPA extortion attempts targeting vulnerable individuals and businesses.

Furthermore, BGen Balaoro Jr hopes that Dela Cruz’s capture will serve as a catalyst for other NPA members to surrender and avail themselves of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration and Amnesty Programs. Despite Dela Cruz’s arrest, pursuit operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining NPA members who fled after the encounter.

This recent clash is not an isolated incident but part of ongoing efforts to combat insurgency. It follows a previous armed encounter on April 18, 2022, in So Angelo, Barangay Umiray, General Nakar, Quezon. During that encounter, two notorious NPA members were killed, and war materiel and subversive documents were seized by government forces, highlighting the persistent threat posed by the NPA and the military’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in affected regions.
