House Senior Deputy Minority Leader and Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist Representative Leila de Lima welcomed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s granting of absolute pardon to overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Mary Jane Veloso, describing the development as long-overdue freedom and justice.

De Lima issued her statement on September 25, 2026, following the President’s decision to grant Veloso absolute pardon. The development comes after years of appeals and efforts by human rights and OFW advocates on behalf of Veloso.

“This is very welcome news, especially for Mary Jane Veloso and her family. Long-overdue freedom and justice.”

The lawmaker also expressed gratitude to the Marcos administration for acting on calls for clemency that, she said, had been raised for years, including efforts during the administration of the late President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to appeal to Indonesia to spare Veloso from execution.

“We thank this administration for heeding our longstanding call, together with various human rights and OFW rights advocates, dating back to the efforts of the late President Noynoy Aquino to appeal to Indonesia to spare Mary Jane from execution. “

Veloso, who spent years imprisoned in Indonesia after being convicted in a drug trafficking case, was repatriated to the Philippines in December 2024 after Indonesia agreed to transfer her to serve the remainder of her sentence in the country. The Palace had confirmed earlier this week that President Marcos was considering granting her absolute pardon on humanitarian grounds.

De Lima acknowledged that the years Veloso spent in detention could no longer be recovered but said the pardon would give her an opportunity to reunite with her family and begin anew.

“Hindi na maibabalik ang mahigit isa’t kalahating dekada na naipagkait sa kanya, pero tayo po ay nagpapasalamat sa pagkakataon na sa wakas ay makakapiling at makapagsisimulang muli si Mary Jane kasama ang kanyang pamilya.”

De Lima further renewed her call for the government to exhaust all possible efforts in protecting Filipino migrant workers facing serious difficulties abroad.

“Patuloy ang panawagan natin sa gobyerno na huwag basta-basta lang sumuko o itigil ang pagsisikap, at sa halip ay laging sagarin ang lahat ng makakaya, para iligtas at protektahan ang kapakanan ng ating mga OFWs.”
