2026 BSKE Cancelled as Marcos Signs Five-Year Barangay, SK Term Law

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12326, extending the term of office of Barangay officials and members of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to five years.

Under the new law, barangay officials may serve a maximum of two consecutive five-year terms in the same position, while SK officials are limited to one five-year term in the same position.

The measure also provides transition rules for incumbent officials. Those covered by the two-year extension will be considered to have completed one full five-year term, while officials already serving their final allowable term will no longer be eligible to seek the same position again.

With the enactment of the law, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled for November 2, 2026, will no longer proceed. The next regular BSKE will instead be held on the second Monday of November 2028, as part of the transition to the new five-year election cycle.

The development follows the previous postponement of the BSKE under Republic Act No. 12232, which had moved the elections to November 2026 and set a four-year term for barangay and SK officials.

The Liga ng mga Barangay welcomed the measure and expressed gratitude to the President for providing barangay officials with a longer period to carry out their responsibilities and programs.

The organization also called on barangay officials to use the additional time to strengthen public services, improve community programs, and maximize their remaining years in office for the benefit of their constituents.

The extension also comes with greater responsibility, as barangay officials are expected to use the additional time in office to deliver programs and services and address the needs of their respective communities.
