BATANGAS – Inanunsyo ng Manila Electric Company (Meralco) ang napipintong joint venture ng Batangas Electric Cooperative o Batelec I at Batelec II, ang electric cooperative na nagsusuplay ng koryente sa 90 percent ng Lalawigan ng Batangas.
Agad naman itong sinuportahan ng halos lahat ng mayor ng mga bayan na nasa ilalim pa rin ng Batelec na kanilanhg ipinahayag sa ginanap na pagtitipon ng League of Municipalities of the Philippines Batangas Chapter.
Maliban sa mga lungsod ng Batangas at Sto Tomas at bayan ng San Pascual, ang lahat ng nalalabing bayan at lungsod at pinangangsiwan pa rin BATELEC.
Layunin ng joint venture ng Meralco at BATELEC na maisaayos at mapagbuti ang kalidad ng serbisyo ng kuryente sa mga bayan ng lalawigan.
Karaniwang reklamo ng mga konsyumer na sakop ng BATELEC ang palagiang brownout at mataas na singil sa kuryente.
Plano ng Meralco na maglagak ng puhunan sa mga electric cooperatives upang mapahusay ang serbisyo sa mga konsyumer sa pamamagitan ng dagdag at maayos na imprastruktura.
Inaasahan na ang inisyatibang ito ay magdudulot ng maaasahan at abot-kayang kuryente, na magpapataas ng economic activity, agricultural productivity, at ginhawa para sa lahat.
