Senate eyes mid-2027 move to new Fort Bonifacio building – Cayetano

The Senate is aiming to begin its long-anticipated move to the New Senate Building (NSB) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City by mid-2027, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said on Thursday.

Cayetano, who chairs the Senate Committee on Accounts overseeing the construction of the new complex, told reporters on June 26, 2025 that given the logistical scale of relocating the entire institution, the full transfer may take six months to a year.

While he initially hoped the Senate could begin transferring as early as the first quarter of 2027, various operational constraints have made that unlikely.

“N’ung una, ang gusto ko nga first quarter ng 2027,” he said. “Pero y’ung negotiation, y’ung bidding, y’ung pag-aayos ng mga opisina [had to be considered].”

With these realities in mind, Cayetano said the leadership is now targeting mid-2027 for the start of the move, with last quarter 2027 as a safety margin to avoid overlap with 2028 operations.

“Y’un ang target… We’re really trying for the middle of 2027,” he said.
“We’re playing safe na last quarter ng 2027, kaya lang ayaw naman natin dumoble ang gastos ng lahat, pati ng mga senador na [kung aabutin pa ng] 2028,” he added.

The New Senate Building, which was originally slated for completion in 2021, is designed to provide the Senate with a modern and permanent home, replacing its current offices housed in a Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) building in Pasay.

Cayetano, who assumed the Accounts Committee chairmanship last year, has consistently said his focus is to ensure the new facility meets the highest standards of functionality and quality without unnecessary expenses.

“We’re getting there,” he said. “What I can assure you with the New Senate Building, hindi nagbabago – how do we have the best building, quality and functionality-wise, at the least price.”

Cayetano emphasized that the transition will be phased, not instantaneous, and will require careful planning.

“Sa dami nga [ng iliipat] sa Senate, records, et cetera, hindi ito parang lipat-bahay na tanggalin mo lahat, lipat mo. Y’ung lipat na ‘yan, six months to one year,” he said.

To support a smooth transition, he is also reviewing the Senate’s lease agreement with GSIS to ensure continued access to office space during the handover period.

“Kasama sa trabaho ko before Monday is ’yung kontrata namin sa GSIS para hindi tayo mawalan ng opisina habang hindi pa tapos ’yung building,” he said.

Cayetano added that the latest technical report on the NSB’s status, prepared by his staff, is almost complete.
“I’ll try to brief you on Monday,” he told reporters.
