Senator Pia Cayetano Backs Stronger Anti-Vape Measures Amid Rising Youth Addiction

Pia S. Cayetano has expressed support for stronger government action against vape products, following the Department of Health’s call for a total ban on vaping devices in the Philippines.

In her statement, Senator Cayetano noted that several Asian nations have already shifted from regulating vape products to implementing complete bans due to growing health concerns, particularly among young people.

She cited eight Southeast Asian countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, and Myanmar — that have already imposed total bans on vape products.

The senator emphasized that the increasing use of e-cigarettes among Filipino youth is alarming. Citing a study conducted by the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute, she revealed that e-cigarette use among adolescents in the country surged to 39.9 percent in 2023, a dramatic rise from just 0.08 percent in 2015.

“We must be willing to explore all options from banning to stricter regulations,” Cayetano said, stressing the need for decisive action to strengthen protections for minors and shield them from the harmful effects of vaping products.
The statement comes amid growing public health concerns over the accessibility and popularity of vape products among teenagers and young adults in the Philippines.
