Historic Canoe Voyage from Taiwan Reaches Batanes for Batanes Day Celebration

Laguna, Philippines — A group of indigenous Taiwanese from Orchid Island, also known as Lanyu, successfully completed a historic sea voyage to Batanes as part of the province’s Batanes Day celebration on June 16, 2026.

The group crossed the Bashi Channel aboard the Ovayan, a hand-built 20-seat traditional wooden canoe, paddling approximately 185 kilometers from Taiwan to the northernmost province of the Philippines. The journey took two days to complete and was undertaken primarily through traditional rowing methods.

The voyage aimed to revive and strengthen the centuries-old maritime and cultural ties between the Tao people of Lanyu and the Ivatan people of Batanes. Historical and cultural connections between the two island communities have long been recognized, with many families sharing ancestral links and traditions that transcend modern national borders.

To ensure the safety of the participants during the challenging crossing, the canoe was accompanied by several escort yachts throughout the journey across the open waters of the Bashi Channel.

Upon their arrival in Batanes, the voyagers were warmly welcomed by local residents and officials participating in the Batanes Day festivities. The visitors also showcased traditional performances and cultural presentations, highlighting the shared heritage between the Tao and Ivatan peoples.

The historic expedition stands as a powerful symbol of friendship, cultural preservation, and the enduring bond between the communities of Lanyu and Batanes, demonstrating how ancient traditions continue to connect people across the sea despite the distance separating their islands.
