Cayetano: Dapat balansehin ng Senado ang impeachment at ibang trabaho

Aminado si Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano na magiging malaking hamon sa Senado kung hahaba pa ang impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte, lalo na ngayong nagsimula na ang Second Regular Session ng 20th Congress.

Ayon kay Cayetano, kailangang pagsabayin ng Senado ang impeachment trial at ang iba nitong mga tungkuling nakasaad sa Konstitusyon, kabilang ang pagtalakay sa panukalang pambansang badyet, pag-aksyon sa mga presidential appointees, at pagpasa ng mga prayoridad na panukalang batas.

“It will be challenging,” pahayag ni Cayetano sa mga mamamahayag sa pagbubukas ng Second Regular Session ng 20th Congress nitong July 27, 2026.

Aniya, lalo pang magiging mabigat ang trabaho ng Senado kung aabot hanggang huling bahagi ng taon ang impeachment proceedings.

“Mas concern ko nga na ‘pag umabot ito [impeachment] ng late October or November, kasi remember kahit na November pa y’ung budget hearings dito [sa Senate], binabantayan na namin [nang maaga] y’ung sa House, binabasa na namin iyon. Iyon ang medyo mabigat,” wika niya.

Ipinaliwanag ni Cayetano na posibleng maubos ang malaking bahagi ng linggo sa impeachment trial at sesyon, dahilan para lumiit ang oras ng mga senador sa committee hearings at iba pang gawaing lehislatibo.

“Y’ung session at saka y’ung impeachment ay Monday to Wednesday. Meron namang Thursday to Saturday, but given that our senators are elected nationwide, dapat nagpapakita din kami sa other parts of the country,” wika niya.

Bukod dito, sinabi rin niyang inaasahan ang mga senador na magampanan pa rin ang kanilang tungkulin sa mga nasasakupan sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa kahit abala sa paglilitis.

Bagaman hindi pa matiyak kung gaano katagal tatagal ang impeachment trial, sinabi ni Cayetano na handa ang Senado na gampanan ang lahat ng nakaatang nitong responsibilidad.

“Hindi ko talaga malaman kung three months, six months [ang itatagal]. Meron nga y’ung sinabi ni Senator Win na sa takbo ngayon, baka umabot ng one year. Let’s see. But we just have to rise to the challenge,” wika niya.
